Size: It can reach a length of 15–20 cm.
Body: It has an elongated body with a gentle compression on the sides.
Colors: Its main characteristic is the bright red-orange color on the head (hence the name pyrocephalus, meaning "flaming head"), combined with bright blue and green reflections on the body and fins.
Behavior: It is a peaceful species, although it can become territorial during reproduction.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the wild it feeds on small invertebrates, organic matter and bottom substrates. In an aquarium it can be fed with flakes, frozen foods and spirulina.
