Procambarus Alleni - Red
Procambarus alleni is one of the most popular aquarium crayfish.
Aquarium: Minimum 60 liters for one individual. If you put more, you need lots of hiding places and space (ideally 100+ liters).
Substrate: Sand or fine gravel, plus hiding places with rocks, pipes, wood. It likes to dig.
Water: Temperature: 20–26°C, pH: 6.5–8.0 (tolerant of a range), GH: 6–12 dGH
Filtration: Clean water, free of ammonia/nitrite. Resistant but needs oxygenation.
Molting (shell change): Like all crayfish, it is vulnerable after changing its shell. Many hiding places and calcium in the water are necessary for a healthy shell.
Compatibility:
Not compatible with small/slow fish or shrimp (they will become prey).
Can coexist with fast medium fish (barbs, rainbowfish), but there is always a risk.
Often preferred in species tanks with only crayfish.

Origin: Florida, USA .
Size: Reaches 10–12 cm. body length (excluding claws).
Behavior: Dynamic and territorial. Often digs and rearranges the aquarium. It is more aggressive than Cherax, with a tendency to catch fish if it can.
Diet: Omnivorous. It accepts pellets for crayfish/catfish, vegetables (peas, cucumber, spinach), but also protein (shrimp, fish, bloodworms).
Procambarus alleni is a beautiful, hardy and relatively easy crayfish for an aquarium. However, it is quite aggressive and it is best to keep it alone or with carefully selected housemates.
