Cherax Black Kong Wild
It is an impressive freshwater crayfish of the genus Cherax, originating from Indonesia (mainly Papua). It needs space, water stability and lots of hiding places. If it is introduced into a social aquarium, great care should be taken in the choice of tankmates.
Size: It reaches about 12–15 cm. in the shell (without the claws). With the claws it can exceed 20 cm.
Color: Deep black or very dark blue/purple body, often with strong contrast on the extremities or claws. The color can change depending on the diet, stress and water conditions.
Behavior: Semi-wild and quite terrestrial. Not overly aggressive compared to other crayfish, but it is territorial and may hunt fish if given the opportunity.
Diet: Omnivorous – they eat submerged foods, vegetables (peas, spinach, zucchini), but also protein foods (shrimp, fish, pellets).
...More
Aquarium: Minimum 80–100 liters for an individual. For a pair/group it needs a much larger one (>200 liters) with many hiding places.
Substrate: Fine gravel or sand, with many caves, rocks and wood for hiding places.
Water: Temperature: 22–27°C, pH: 6.5–7.5, GH: 6–12 dGH
Filtration: Strong, with low nitrates. Requires clean water, as it is sensitive to toxins.
Compatibility: Not recommended with small fish, shrimp or snails (it will hunt them). Can coexist with medium/large fast fish that do not stay on the bottom. Better in a species tank (aquarium exclusively for crayfish).
Molting (shell change): Very critical period – they need hiding places and proper calcium in the water (you can add cuttlebone or minerals).
