Hydrocynus vittatus, also known as the African Tigerfish, is one of the most impressive and predatory freshwater fish in Africa. It belongs to the Alestidae family, and is widely known for its speed, aggressive nature and large, sharp teeth.
Origin:
It is endemic to rivers and lakes of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the Zambezi River, Congo River, Lake Karumba and other large water bodies.
Morphology:
Size: It can reach 70–100 cm in length and weigh up to 15 kg, although most specimens found are around 40–60 cm in length.
Body: Long and muscular, ideal for speed and maneuverability.
Color: Silver body with vertical dark stripes along the body. Fins with orange or red hues.
Teeth: Very large, sharp and extremely prominent – similar to those of the piranha, but larger and fewer in number.
Behavior:
A highly predatory and aggressive fish, it hunts mainly other fish.

Environment:
It prefers clean rivers with strong currents and deep waters.
It lives in areas with a high presence of other fish, as it is strictly carnivorous.
It can withstand a relatively wide range of temperatures: 24–30°C.
Diet:
Primarily carnivorous, it feeds on other fish (including smaller ones of its own species), crustaceans and occasional insects.
In an aquarium:
It requires a very large aquarium (500 liters or more).
It needs strong filtration, strong current, and a secure lid because it is an excellent jumper.
It is not suitable for a common aquarium – it will eat almost anything that moves and fits in its mouth.
