Scientific name: Otocinclus negros
Family: Loricariidae
Origin: South America (tributaries of the Amazon).
Size: 3–4.5 cm (adult).
Appearance: Small catfish with a silver-gray body and a dark line running along the body.
Behavior: Extremely peaceful, schooling fish. Should be kept in groups (at least 5–6 individuals).
Diet:
Mainly herbivorous, they feed on algae, biofilms and microorganisms from surfaces.
In an aquarium, they need supplementary food, because algae is often not enough:
Spirulina tablets & algae wafers
Boiled vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, peas)
They do not compete strongly with other fish for food, so additional nutrition is necessary.
The Otocinclus negros is ideal for planted community tanks, but is considered a “sensitive” species and needs stable, clean water conditions to thrive.
