Hyphessobrycon flammeus is the well-known Flame Tetra, a small, beautiful and popular freshwater fish. Peaceful schooling fish. Should be kept in groups of at least 6–8 individuals (ideally 10+ for natural behavior). It coexists comfortably with other small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras and generally peaceful fish. Omnivorous. Origin: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, tributaries of the Paraiba do Sul River).
Size: 2.5–3.5 cm usually, rarely up to 4 cm.
Lifespan: 4–5 years in good conditions.
Appearance: Bright red–orange body with a darker shade towards the tail. The fins are often red or orange with a black tip on the dorsal fin.
Liters: From 60L and up for a school.
Temperature: 22–28°C (ideally 24–26°C).
pH: 5.5 – 7.5 (better slightly acidic, ~6.5).
Hardness: 2–15 dGH.
Plants & Decoration: Likes planted aquariums with dark substrate and soft lighting. The presence of roots/branches helps to provide a sense of security.
