It is a moss with a creeping habit native to temperate to subtropical climates: the southeastern US and East Asia. In the habitat, it lives on the ground and exposed tree roots, in rotten wood in swamps and on rocks in streams and waterfalls. Taiwan mosses are very similar to Taxiphyllum barbieri, however, under good lighting they branch more densely and regularly. The two species can also be distinguished under the microscope: the leaf margin of T. alternans is serrated only around the edge of the leaf, while the entire margin of T. barbieri is finely serrate. Taxiphyllum alternans 'Taiwan' is highly recommended for nano aquariums.
