Nannostomus beckfordi is the well-known Beckford’s Pencilfish, an elegant, small Amazonian fish that stands out for its elongated body and calm nature.

pH: 5.5 – 7.5 (ideally slightly acidic).
Hardness: 2 – 10 dGH (soft water preferred).
Decoration: Densely planted aquarium with dark substrate, roots and wood that create hiding places. Prefers soft lighting (or use of floating plants).
Compatibility: Ideal for social aquariums with small, peaceful fish (tetra, rasbora, corydoras, otocinclus). Avoid aggressive or much larger species.

Common name: Beckford’s Pencilfish
Size: 4–6 cm (sometimes up to 7 cm).
Body shape: Elongated, like a “pencil”, with a characteristic swimming style at a slight upward angle.
Coloration: Golden–yellow body with a strong black horizontal line extending from snout to tail. In males, the fins are more intensely colored with red or orange shades.
Behavior: Peaceful, schooling fish, best in groups of 8+ individuals. They move mainly in the middle–upper layers of the aquarium.
Omnivorous with a tendency to carnivory: Small live or frozen foods (artemia, daphnia, small bloodworms). They also eat flakes and micropellets, but they especially appreciate a variety of natural foods.
