Lighting:
Low to medium light tolerance — can grow well without bright light
In medium light it has a more vibrant green, better appearance and faster growth, while in low light it has a light shade and slower growth
Substrates & Temperature:
Prefers nutritious substrates — even without CO2, but the use of nutrient-rich soil and root-tabs enhances growth
Ideal temperature: about 20–28 °C (or 22–28 °C according to tissue-culture sources)
pH & Water Hardness:
pH: ~6.0–7.5
Soft to moderately hard water
CO2 & Nutrients:
CO2 is not necessary, but improves faster and more vigorous growth in more intense conditions
Nutrients via substrate or root-tabs help significantly
Maintenance:
Remove fallen/dead leaves regularly for best appearance and health
Perform regular water changes (e.g. 20–30% weekly) to maintain a clean and stable environment
Gradual changes (light, water, nutrients) help: avoid drastic changes to avoid “Melting”
Additional organisms such as algae-eating shrimps/fish help with algae control
Conclusion:
Cryptocoryne x willisii ‘Lucens’ is an ideal choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists. It offers a natural, grassy green carpet or medium-height plant, without requiring any special techniques or conditions. Ideal for low to moderate lighting, without mandatory CO2, but with good substrates and a stable environment, it will flourish and decorate your aquarium with natural beauty and simplicity.
